Decision to Stay at Casale Terre Rosse
Last February we traveled to Terme di Saturnia hot springs in Tuscany, Italy. I had seen a photo of this incredible natural hot springs on Pinterest years before and decided to make a trip there with the kiddos (6 months and 2.5 years at the time) a reality when we scored a fantastic flight deal to Rome. The area around the hot springs is fairly rural, but there’s actually a lot of lodging options thanks to its moderate popularity. Most of the lodging options, however, are really small places more like lodges, home stays, or bed and breakfasts. We knew we wanted to be close to the hot springs to make visiting easy with the kids. After searching in a 15 minute radius to the hot springs, we settled on Casale Terre Rosse, a six room bed and breakfast with a 9.4 rating on Booking, reasonable pricing, and located just a six minute drive from the hot springs. You can read my full review and guide to visiting Terme di Saturnia hot springs with a baby here.

Getting There
Since the area is quite rural, we chose to rent a car and drive from Rome. We put Casale Terre Rosse into Google maps and had no problem reaching it, despite some mentions in reviews of getting confused and feeling uncertain about the gravel road you have to turn onto at the end right before you reach Casale Terre Rosse. As you turn off the paved road (SP10) onto the gravel road there’s a prominent sign for Casale Terre Rosse so you’ll know you’re turning in the right place. The gravel road is in good condition and is almost more like a long driveway than anything, so nothing to worry about.
Good to know: The drive to Casale Terre Rosse and Terme di Saturnia is just 2 hours from Rome. You’ll have to turn off a paved road onto a gravel road to reach Casale Terre Rosse, but there’s a sign for Casale Terre Rosse where you make that turn so it’s obvious you’re in the right place. The gravel road is in good condition and you’re barely on it before reaching Casale Terre Rosse, so any kind of vehicle is fine.
You can see that you’ll turn off SP10 - the paved road - onto a gravel road but only for a short period of time before reaching Casale Terre Rosse

Check In
Check in was super easy. We arrived in the afternoon and I just walked around until I found the open door to the dining area, which also includes the check in desk. One of the owners was there and he was very pleasant. He scanned our passports (standard protocol while staying somewhere internationally) and within minutes had given me our key and pointed me in the direction of our room.
The Grounds
The grounds of Casale Terre Rosse are fairly extensive and perched atop a little knoll with lovely views of classic rolling green Tuscan hills and olive groves. We visited in February so very few things in the gardens around the bed and breakfast were blooming, but everything was still green and absolutely beautiful and the potted citrus trees were covered in fruit. The area around the bed and breakfast is nicely graveled, including a marked gravel parking area, and there are gravel paths all through their landscaping, which was really enchanting and super fun for a toddler to explore. The owners’ dog (Kika) and kitty roamed the grounds freely, but both were very calm and sweet and the kids loved them. Something to be aware of though if that would make you uncomfortable. We also explored the olive grove growing on the hillside just below Casale Terre Rosse, which felt like a quintessential activity for the area, made even better by the abundance of tiny blooming wildflowers between the rows of trees.
Good to know: When we visited in 2024, the owners’ cat and dog freely roamed the grounds throughout the day. They were both super sweet and calm and no issue to us - just something to be aware of in case you’re allergic or uncomfortable around cats and/or dogs.

Our Room
The rooms are simple with few furnishings, but it was sufficient for us and we loved having our own little private porch with two swinging chairs. The kids loved them and it was incredible relaxing to sit there swinging in the sun in the afternoons. Our room was a family room with a double bed and a single bed, so perfect for Jasper. We put the single bed mattress on the floor for him since he was just 2.5-years-old on this trip and we didn’t want him to roll off the bed onto the tile floor. It worked great. Unfortunately, they don’t have any cribs or pack n plays at Casale Terre Rosse, so we just had to make a little bed for Freya on the floor with coats, pillows, and towels. She slept okay though and took good naps in our bed during the day. Each room has a heater and AC, TV with local channels and a few international offerings, and a bathroom with a shower and bidet. We’ve taken showers with Jasper and Freya from an early age while traveling, so they both did fine showering during out stay instead of taking baths, but it’s something to keep in mind if you have little ones that don’t do well with showers. You get a key to your room at check in so we were able to leave things in the room and lock it. Each room has a mini fridge, so that was nice for storing milk for Freya and drinks for us.
Good to know: Casale Terre Rosse has family rooms with an extra bed, but does not offer cots or pack n plays for infants. They also don’t have any rooms with bathtubs, just showers. No issue for us, but something to be aware of.

Breakfast
Breakfast is included at Casale Terre Rosse. If I’m remembering correctly, it’s served in their little dining area between 7am-10am and you can go whenever you please during that time. You can eat inside in the dining area or at one of the little tables just outside. It was really cold in the mornings while we were there so we chose to eat inside each day. The food was set out continental style so you could help yourself without having to order off a menu, which was really nice. It wasn’t a huge breakfast, but it was delicious and sufficient with things like tarts, yogurt, bread, cheese, fruit, boiled eggs, and juice. The food was the same every day. When we walked in, one of the owners was always there keeping an eye on things and would ask if we wanted coffee. If so, he would go and make it up in their kitchen. He made me a lovely cappuccino every morning. We took the kids the first day and regretted it as the space is really very small so we worried that we were being disruptive to other guests and kept worrying the kids were going to knock things over. In warmer weather if would have been easy to eat with them outside, but because it was so chilly, Justin and I just decided after that to take turns having breakfast by ourselves and fed the kids in the room with food we picked up from a grocery store.
Good to know: The dining area is really small with the tables very close together, so if you have young kids, eating in the patio area outside the dining room would be easier and less nerve wracking if the weather was good

Final Thoughts
We loved our stay at Casale Terre Rosse! It was so relaxing and beautiful and the location couldn’t be better for accessing Terme di Saturnia. It quiet and romantic if you’re visiting as a couple, but is also great for families with the option of getting a family room and spacious grounds for wandering and outside play. Plus, our kiddos loved the dog and cat :) If we visit Terme di Saturnia again, we would definitely stay again.
